"Palm donkey” and more

Cherished traditions

The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday. Learn about the unique traditions we celebrate in Tyrol.

The day begins with the lighthearted teasing of late risers. This is because the last person to get out of bed on Palm Sunday earns the title of “Palmesel” (Palm donkey) and must endure a bit of teasing throughout the day.

However, it is the Palm Sunday procession that truly showcases the magnificence of our Tyrolean traditions. Girls decorate their Palmbuschen” bouquets of pussy willow and olive branches with colourful ribbons and sweet pretzels. Meanwhile, the boys present elaborate “Palmlatten” (palm staffs), with some reaching lengths of up to 35 metres. In Imst, not far from our Hotel in Tyrol, there is even a competition for the longest palm staff. These handmade works of art are blessed and protect the home from lightning and fire. In Tyrol, Palm Sunday is not only a religious celebration but also a colourful spectacle that you are sure to enjoy during your spring holiday with us!
