A time-honoured carnival tradition

Where carnival comes alive!

Once every four years, the town of Imst bursts into an extraordinary festive mode. Discover what makes it so special.

The Imst Schemenlaufen is a unique carnival tradition steeped in history that turns the town into a whirlwind of colour, energy, and excitement. Traditionally, this vibrant celebration takes place on the Sunday before Fat Thursday, lasting from the early hours of the morning until exactly 6:00 p.m.

Men play the leading role: sporting impressive costumes, they represent numerous male and female characters. The elaborate costumes are crafted with care by the participants’ wives and girlfriends. Numerous quaint and traditional figures fill the streets and enchant carnival lovers.

The Imst Schemenlaufen was added to the list of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012, and it is where Tyrol’s most colourful tradition unfolds in all its glory. For those on walking holidays in the Alps in early February, this carnival offers a perfect cultural interlude, allowing you to experience this magnificent spectacle firsthand.
